Postdoctoral Scholar (HCI/AI Focus)
COoKIE Group at the Faculty of Information, University of Toronto is seeking a researcher to join our interdisciplinary team as a Postdoctoral Scholar with a focus on Human Communication with Artificial Agents. This position is part of a project on Human-Agent Conversation Architecture and would be particularly suitable for candidates with interests/experience in conversational agents, human-AI interaction, explainable AI, AI-supported decision-making, ethical AI, or related areas. About Us: COoKIE Group is an interdisciplinary research collective housed at the Faculty of Information, University of Toronto. The group is focused on understanding and supporting Human-AI collaborative communication, with an emphasis on informing the system and algorithm design requirements for effective, efficient, and ethical AI. Responsibilities: Conduct HCI research to explore the specifics and underlying mechanisms of Human-AI communication. Collaborate with researchers to develop and implement research projects from start to finish. Write and publish research papers for conferences/journals. Attend and present work at international conferences. Mentor junior researchers in the group. In addition, successful candidates will be encouraged to write papers and prepare grant applications on topics related to their research agenda and career goals. Qualifications: A Ph.D. in Human-Computer Interaction, Computer Science, Information Science, or a related field, with a focus on conversational agents, Human-AI interaction, explainable AI, ethical AI, or related areas. Expertise in conducting user-centered research, and analyzing qualitative and quantitative data. Familiarity with machine learning, natural language processing, LLMs, or related areas. Established HCI publication record. Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with a demonstrated ability to work effectively within interdisciplinary teams. The ability to develop and implement system prototypes is strongly preferable. The successful candidate will have the freedom to shape their research and contribute to the field of HCI and Human-AI collaboration.
